The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has refuted claims that the 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery has ceased operations, affirming that the facility remains fully operational despite contrary media reports.
IDOMA VOICE reports that the refinery, which resumed production in November 2024 following an extensive rehabilitation process, plays a key role in boosting the domestic supply of petroleum products.
Earlier reports suggested that petrol lifting at the refinery had halted, citing an empty 18-arm loading bay on Friday, December 13. Journalists visiting the site observed about 18 trucks along the road leading to the refinery and nine trucks parked within the yard, but the loading bay was reportedly idle.

In response, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi O. Soneye, dismissed these assertions, confirming that operations are proceeding as planned.
Soneye stated, “The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, re-streamed two months ago, has been shut down.
“We wish to clarify that such reports are entirely false. The refinery is fully operational, as confirmed recently by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC. Preparations for the day’s loading operations are currently ongoing.
