No track record in sports – Nigerians react to Enoh’s appointment as minister of sports

The recent appointment of Senator John Enoh as the new Minister of Sports Development has sparked widespread criticism among sports enthusiasts in Nigeria. As the news broke, reactions flooded social media platforms, with many expressing disbelief and concern about the choice.

The announcement of Enoh’s appointment was made public on Wednesday by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, during the unveiling of the list of ministers and their portfolios.

Enoh, hailing from Cross River State, is a well-known philanthropist and farmer. He previously held membership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until his defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in May 2017. Despite his background in politics, Enoh lacks a notable track record in sports.

Reactions from sports-loving Nigerians have been largely skeptical. Many have expressed doubts about Enoh’s ability to positively impact the sports ministry, given his absence of relevant experience or credentials in the field.

Social media users shared their thoughts on the appointment:

@02smyles: “I pity sports in Nigeria. No track record in sports whatsoever. Are we in for a surprise? We are watching.”

@Eseksmills: “John Owan Enoh, a former Senator from Cross River State… Elder brother to former Vice Chancellor of Unicross, Prof Anthony Owan Enoh. Yes, I know him, but Minister of sports huh!! I don’t think he’s capable of achieving anything there.”

@IamRoyalEagle: “One of the square pegs in round holes. I’m sorry for our Sports journalists.”

@aluta_michael: “This is the problem..A regular politician with no sporting history going to such a ministry..stagnation.”

@Plugxox: “Nothing in his CV shows sports???”

The selection of Senator Enoh, who lacks a background in sports, has ignited concerns about the direction and effectiveness of Nigeria’s sports development efforts. As the nation looks forward to the future of its sports sector, the appointment has raised important questions about the qualifications and expertise required for such a crucial role.
