Nobody gave me Rivers governorship, I earned it – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied claims that political leaders in Rivers State played a pivotal role in making him governor. While acknowledging the support he received, Wike emphasized that his rise to power was due to his own efforts and determination.

Speaking at a civic reception for his supporters in Port Harcourt on Friday, Wike contrasted his political journey with that of the current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, whom he claimed to have installed as governor.

His comments came in response to recently resurfaced social media videos, where former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, is seen introducing Wike to former Governor Peter Odili and other political leaders as the favored candidate to succeed Rotimi Amaechi. These videos have sparked renewed discussions, particularly amid ongoing tensions between Wike and Odili, exacerbated by a political rift with Governor Fubara.

Wike expressed frustration with Odili, accusing him of openly supporting Fubara instead of maintaining a neutral, fatherly role in the state’s political conflicts.

Reflecting on his rise to power, Wike stated, “You didn’t give me the governorship of Rivers State in 2014. I fought for the party structure. I took it from Magnus Abe, yes, I did. So, no one can say they made me governor. I fought for the party structure and won.”

He added, “No one can say I was handed the governorship. But it would be unfair to deny the support I received. You do need people’s support, but that doesn’t mean they gave me the position.”
