Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has issued threats of retaliation following the arrest of his close associate, Bako Wurgi, by Nigerian Army troops.
Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, was a key figure in Turji’s criminal network, handling ransom negotiations and collecting payments from kidnappings. His capture has reportedly enraged Turji, who is now threatening violent reprisals against communities in Zamfara State.
According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, Wurgi’s arrest was carried out by troops from the 1 Brigade of the Nigerian Army after receiving credible intelligence. Wurgi was apprehended while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State, for injuries sustained during a violent clash with a rival group.
Wurgi’s criminal record includes arms trafficking and involvement in high-profile murders, notably the killing of Alhaji Isa Mohammad Bawa, the Emir of Gobir in Sokoto State. The traditional ruler was abducted in July near Kwanar Maharba in Sokoto State and killed three weeks later after ransom negotiations failed.
The Nigerian Army disclosed that two of Wurgi’s accomplices escaped during the operation, but another individual who assisted in transporting Wurgi via tricycle was arrested.
Makama revealed that Turji has already reached out to influential figures in Shinkafi, including village heads, threatening attacks on their communities if Wurgi is not released. Turji has allegedly vowed to spend any amount of money or livestock to secure Wurgi’s freedom.
With control over a large number of people and livestock, Turji has reportedly declared his readiness to use them as leverage to pressure authorities into complying with his demands.
