The National Population Commission (NPC) in Benue State has flagged off Phase 8 of the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) in Obi LGA, as part of preparation for the forthcoming census.
According to the Honourable Federal Commissioner, North Central, NPC, Mrs Patricia Kupchi-Ori Iyanya, the EAD constitutes the foundation on which the entire census architecture stands.
She, therefore, urged critical stakeholders especially the media to support the Commission to see to the full realisation of the conduct of the next census.
Kupchi who delivered the NPC address on behalf of her boss during the Flag Off/Media Briefing at Obi LG Secretariat, Obarike-Ito on Monday, said Obi people should consider themselves as lucky to be among the early birds in the exercise that will subsequently cover the entire state and the federation by the Commission and as such urged for their maximum support towards the success of the pre-census exercise in Obi.
“The EAD can be likened to the foundation of a building, the strength of which including its finishing is dependent on how well its foundation is laid. The EAD therefore forms the basis for the planning and successful execution of the census project.
” The EAD is the vehicle that drags the entire census process. This is why we in the Commission have resolved to get it right in our quest to deliver to the nation an accurate, reliable, acceptable and verifiable census,” she said.
She said that a Demarcation Team, consisting of demarcation officials, supervisors and Quality Control Assistants, as well as adequate logistics arrangement were each place for the EAD.
The NPC federal commissioner appealed to the LG authority and traditional institution to provide guide and accommodation for the field staff.
The royal fathers and the local government chairman, in their various responses thanked the NPC for selecting Obi LGA in this phase of the exercise, assuring of maximum support.
They said it was an opportunity to correct whatever error done in Obi in the 2006 population census, calling on all stakeholders to ensure the success of the exercise in the area.
