FG approves N19bn for N-Power training

The Federal Government, on Monday, in Abuja, approved the total sum of N19.24bn for the training of 50,000 non-graduate N-power beneficiaries and the procurement of taxiway lighting system in the Port Harcourt, Lagos and Abuja airports.

The sum also covers consultancy services for the Dadin Kowa 40MW power project in Gombe State and the furnishing of the 10-storey headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency located in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Ministers of Humanitarian Affairs, Social Development and Disaster Management, Sadiya Farouk, and her counterparts in the Ministries of Aviation, Education and Water Resources, revealed this to journalists after an extraordinary meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House, Abuja.

The Importance of Timely Payments

Timely payment of stipends is crucial to ensuring that beneficiaries can meet their basic needs and continue to participate in the Npower program. The Npower program has been instrumental in providing Nigerian youth with skills that enable them to become self-reliant and contribute to the country’s economy. It is therefore essential that the government ensures that payments are made on time to support the sustainability of the program and the livelihoods of beneficiaries.

In the latest Npower news for May 15, 2023, it has been reported that Npower volunteers’ beneficiaries are appealing to the Minister of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, to settle all outstanding stipends before she leaves office. The beneficiaries of the Npower program are concerned that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration will be coming to a close this month and are urging the Minister to ensure that all payments are made before the end of her tenure.

Npower Program Background

In 2016, the Npower program was launched by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to equip Nigerian youth with employment and entrepreneurship skills. The program has been successful in providing opportunities for beneficiaries to acquire practical skills and improve their employability. However, the recent delay in the payment of stipends has caused concerns among beneficiaries who rely on the payments to support themselves and their families.

Efforts to Address Payment Delays

The Npower management has apologized for the delay in payment of stipends for January, February, March, and April. While work is still ongoing to pay backlogs for beneficiaries who had previously verified their account information, beneficiaries are being asked to exercise patience as payment will soon begin. A few weeks ago, the Honourable Sadiya Umar Farouq had declared that the Npower initiative would continue as long as the future administration was led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), providing some reassurance for beneficiaries about the program’s continuity.

The N-power program was introduced in 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to provide employability and entrepreneurship skills to Nigerian youths. As President Buhari’s administration ends this May 2023, Npower beneficiaries are calling on the Minister to clear all payment backlogs before her departure from office.

It is noteworthy that a few weeks ago, the Honourable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, stated that as the Npower program was initiated by the APC government, it would continue under the incoming APC leadership.
