The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its nationwide strike following an agreement with the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals over the contentious issue of workers’ unionisation.

Fuel stations across the country were shut down on Tuesday after a two-day industrial action by union members, who accused the Dangote Group of denying employees the right to join recognised labour unions.

At a conciliation meeting convened in Abuja by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, both parties reached a resolution, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement stated that unionisation is a legal right, and management consented to allow employees of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals to join unions of their choice. The process of unionisation is expected to commence immediately and be concluded within two weeks, between September 9 and 22, 2025.

It was also agreed that the employer will not create parallel unions and that no employee will be victimised for participating in the strike.
