Obama includes Burna Boy, Ayra Starr’s songs in summer playlist

Musicians Burna Boy and Ayra Starr have once again found themselves in the spotlight, this time making it to former US President Barack Obama’s highly anticipated 2023 summer playlist. Obama, the 44th American leader, unveiled his eclectic musical selection via his Twitter handle on Thursday night, showcasing an exciting mix of songs from various artists.

Among the tracks that made the esteemed playlist were “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” by Grammy award-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy, featuring the US-based British rapper 21 Savage. Additionally, Ayra Starr’s captivating song “Sability” earned its place as the only afrobeats representation on the playlist.

Delighted by the inclusion of the two Nigerian artists, Obama tweeted, “Like I do every year, here are some songs I’ve been listening to this summer — a mix of old and new. Look forward to hearing what I’ve missed.”

This is not the first time Nigerian talents have graced Obama’s playlist. In previous years, Wizkid, Tems, and Rema have also enjoyed the honor. Rema’s “Iron Man” from his debut EP was featured on Obama’s 2019 summer playlist, while Wizkid and Tems’ hit track “Essence” made the cut in the 2021 summer playlist.
