BURIAL ARRANGEMENT FOR LATE ASC. OGAH OCHIGBO JUMBO
(UNLAWFULLY AND EXTRA JUDICIALLY KILLED BY MEN OF THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE
ON 20TH OF MARCH 2019 IN NYANYA FCT.)
It will be recalled that on the 20th of March 2019 between the hours of 7:30 and 10: am,
officers of the Nigeria Police Abuja snuffed the life out of our dear son, brother, husband and
father in the presence of his wife and two infant children. Late Asc Ogah Ochigbo Jumbo was
a two star officer of the NSCDC. The incident occurred at Nyanya Abuja FCT, just by the
Redeemed Christian Church of God Junction near the Nyanya Market.
It is sad to note that up to the time of this press release the Nigeria Police has shown no
sympathy to members of the family over the gruesome killing of the deceased, but rather
has chosen to cover up what actually happened because they want to protect some of the
suspected police officers and the image of the Nigerian Police Force, especially the DPO of
the Nyanya Police Station Area F.
The cover up, lies and innuendos were further confirmed by the family & public when the
PRO of the Nigerian Police ACP Frank Mba on the eve of that same Day 21st of March disclosed
at a press briefing, alleging that the deceased died of natural causes while being interrogated
by men of the Nigeria Police Area F Nyanya..
It was because of the blackmail and campaign of calumny by Nigeria Police, that the family
insisted that an autopsy be carried out on late Asc Ogah Ochigbo Jumbo. This was carried out
on Tuesday 26th of March 2019 at the General Hospital Maitama FCT. The autopsy confirmed
that late Asc Ogah Ochigbo Jumbo died of several blunt force injury to his head and body. It
was at this point the Force PRO retracted his earlier version of the incident, he then admitted
and took responsibility for the killing by two of his officers. He further informed the public
that the two officers excluding the DPO of Nyanya Police Station (who is also culpable) were
being arraigned in a Court Room Trial. The criminal case against the two accused officers
commenced on the 3rd of may 2019 at the FCT High Court Karu Abuja which is now adjourned
to 8th and 9th of Sept 2019.
To the glory of God, the family of the deceased survived this painful ordeal through out the
past 4 months until The Nigeria Police decided to release the death certificate of the
deceased. We received the death certificate of the deceased dated 26th June, 2019 from the
Nigeria Police through the NSCDC on the 1st of July 2019.In view of this development the
family decided to make urgent preparations for the burial ceremony for the deceased. It is
painful to note that up till now the Nigeria Police has not made any contact with our family
members in person, phone or correspondence. In fact they are unremorseful and have chosen
to protect their image by blackmailing our family. Since the incident, the family of the
deceased has continued to survive with support from family members and benevolent
Nigerians. The family is funding all burial expenses with no support whatsoever from the
Nigerian Police Force or any other body. The burial arrangement is as follows:
1) Tuesday, 23rd July, 2019 – Corpse released by the Nigeria Police FCT command,
Abuja to NSCDC and Family of the deceased.
(2) Thursday 25th July, 2019 – Christian Wake keep at his residence at New Nyanya
(near the Timber shade) Nasarawa State. Time: 5.00pm
(3) Saturday 27th July, 2019 –Body leaves Abuja for Otukpo Benue State for
Christian Burial Ceremony at his home town, Akpegede, Otukpo, Benue State at Late
Pa Jumbo Unah’s residence. (Near Otukpo Golf and country Club). The body will also
be interred at 4.00pm on the same day
We the family of late Asc Ogah have vowed to pursue this senseless killing over a minor traffic
offence (as alleged by the police) until justice is done. The decision became pertinent in
view of the everlasting psychological trauma that his wife and two infant sons will have live
with. They kept begging the policemen not to kill their daddy. The Police men turned deaf
ears to their plea and kept battering their father until he died.
We are greatly encouraged to pursue this course by the commitment of OWA K’ AOKEPO
K’IDOMA (The Association of Idoma Lawyers) led by Chief Godwin Obla (SAN) and Dr J.Y.
Musa (SAN); the association has continued to ensure that the family gets free legal assistance
in pursuit of this matter. OPIATHOHA K’IDOMA (Idoma National Forum) and OFU K’IDOMA
(IDOMA FRIENDSHIP FORUM ABUJA). We are also encouraged by efforts of the Joint Civil
Society Action Against Extra Judicial Killings led by Bar. Paul Edeh and Mrs. Aisha Yesufu,
they have continued to lend its voice in demanding for justice in the matter.
We thank The Governor of Benue State his Excellency Dr. Samuel Ortom and his Deputy,
Engr. Benson Abounu, Senator David Mark and his wife Mrs Helen Oma Mark (Ene-ewa of
Idoma kingdom), Distinguished Senator Abba Moro (Senator representing Zone C Benue
State), Chief Audu Ogbe (former Minister for Agriculture and Rural development), His Royal
Highness Dr. John Eimonye Och’Otukpo, Chief Sylvester Ameh, the Ojebo k’Idoma, Hon.
George Ali (the Executive Chairman Otukpo local government) and numerous Nigerians whose
names cannot be mentioned here for their invaluable support and encouragement to the
family.
Finally, we are appealing to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to
please ensure that justice is done in the case of Late Asc Ogah Ochigbo Jumbo.
Signed:
Chief Ochigbo D. Jumbo
