Ogba City Mall, Ajah Market sealed over waste disposal offenses in Lagos

In a joint effort, the Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority and the State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, took decisive action on Sunday by sealing the Ogba City Mall in Ikeja and Ajah Market in Eti-Osa, Lagos State.

This information was shared in an official statement provided to PUNCH Metro by Folashade Kadiri, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Waste Management Authority.

The statement further revealed that the enforcement team also carried out the clearance of shanties and structures housing illegal traders along the Ajah Jubilee Bridge and the BRT corridor.

Commenting on these developments, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, emphasized that this action is a part of the government’s ongoing efforts to combat improper waste disposal practices and unsanitary conditions at marketplaces and commercial establishments across the state.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, urged traders and corporate stakeholders to proactively work towards maintaining a clean and healthy workplace.

The statement clarified, “The Lagos State Government has taken the step to close down Ogba City Mall, Ikeja, and Ajah Market, Eti-Osa, due to various violations related to waste disposal. This operation was conducted by the collaborative enforcement teams consisting of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, LASTMA, and LAGSEC (KAI).

“Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, explained that this enforcement action is a continuation of the administration’s commitment to eradicating litter and indiscriminate waste disposal in markets and business facilities throughout the state.

“He stated: ‘We are intensifying our efforts to uphold the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards untidiness and irresponsible waste disposal by traders and business establishments. We have consistently cautioned business owners that they should anticipate action if they fail to fulfill their responsibilities in maintaining a clean environment. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains steadfast in pursuing this vital goal for the greater public good.’

“Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, affirmed that the zero-tolerance campaign is an ongoing endeavor and encouraged markets and business stakeholders to take proactive measures to ensure a clean and hygienic environment.”
