Former Aston Villa striker, Gabby Agbonlahor, has voiced his disapproval of goalkeeper Andre Onana’s heated reaction towards his teammate Harry Maguire during Manchester United’s recent pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund, which ended in a 3-2 defeat in Las Vegas.
Onana, who was making his second appearance for the Premier League giants following his move from Inter Milan, came on for Tom Heaton just after half-time with the Red Devils trailing by a goal after Donyell Malen’s quick brace.
Around the 47th minute of the match, Onana displayed his frustration towards Maguire, seemingly upset with the defender’s decision to pass the ball to Dortmund’s attackers, allowing them multiple shots on goal.
Reacting swiftly, Onana managed to block the initial attempt from Sebastien Haller, and luckily for Manchester United, Karim Adeyemi’s subsequent shot went wide.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper immediately marched over to Maguire, who was positioned on the other side of the penalty area, and delivered an impassioned rebuke.
While the specific content of Onana’s remarks to the Man United captain remains unclear, it was an outburst of anger that caught the attention of Agbonlahor, who felt that the goalkeeper’s reaction was unwarranted.
In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Agbonlahor expressed his views on the incident, stating, “First of all, Harry Maguire did nothing wrong. He passed the ball to a midfielder who then lost possession. I feel like he [Maguire] is an easy target.”
Agbonlahor further questioned Onana’s actions, suggesting that the goalkeeper would not treat other teammates, such as Lisandro Martinez or Marcus Rashford, in the same manner.
