Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has delivered a scathing assessment of Ademola Lookman’s penalty-taking skills following the team’s 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League knockout round play-offs.
Despite scoring Atalanta’s only goal of the match, Lookman missed a crucial penalty that could have revived his team’s chances. Speaking after the loss on Tuesday, Gasperini did not hide his frustration.
“Ademola Lookman is one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen,” the Atalanta coach stated bluntly.
Gasperini further revealed that Lookman took the spot-kick despite other designated takers being available.
“He insisted on taking the penalty after scoring a goal. He took the ball even though Retegui and De Keteleare were ready to step up… I didn’t like what Lookman did,” Gasperini added.
The missed penalty proved costly, as Atalanta failed to mount a comeback and were eliminated from the competition.
