Ortom moves to reduce workers’ salaries in Benue

By Tahav Agerzua
Major stakeholders in Benue State today pledged to assist Governor Samuel Ortom to tackle the challenge of salary payment in the state.

They urged him to set up a committee to compare notes with other states on the matter for presentation at the next meeting for them to advise him on the next line of action.

Ambassador Iyorwuese Hagher made the suggestion during a meeting of the stakeholders convened by Governor Ortom which was held at the Benue Peoples House.

Those who made contributions on the subject included retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice James Ogebe, Mr Raph Igbago and General Lawrence Onoja, retired.

The speakers said decisive action must be taken on the issues as it affected the lives of thousands of people since Benue State was predominantly a civil service state.

They commended the Governor for making security a priority of his administration and for embarking on projects that add value on the lives of the people of the state.
In his address at the occasion Governor Ortom had sought advice on the way forward.

“Ours is one of the highest wage bills in the country and with each passing day it is becoming more obvious with dwindling resources that payment of salaries has become a major challenge, we believe that as stakeholders in the Benue project you might assist us to find the way forward,” he stated.

“One obvious way is to collectively and carefully review salaries in mutually acceptable way that government can pay and also execute projects for the good of all.”
