Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has inaugurated a 10-member Salary Verification Committee with a charge on them to ascertain the authentic wage bill of the state.
The Committee made up of experienced technocrats has Mr. Tertsea Ikyaabo, a retired permanent Secretary in the state ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment as Chairman and Terhemen Jato as Secretary.
Other members are Wondoo Atikpo, Jeremiah Ikuba, Iorpenda Tarnguhar, Regina Are, S.U Ikomon Peter Pa, Orindia Shie and Philip Nongo.
Inaugurating the committee, Governor Ortom urged its members to explore the bank verification number BVN and other ICT related measures to guard against future multiple payments to individual public servants.
He expressed concern over the huge wage bill of the state caused by the presence of ghost workers on the payroll; a development he said has made regular payment of salaries extremely difficult.
Governor Ortom who stated that the state wage bill of over N4 billion had affected development in all sectors of the economy, charged the committee members to expose the syndicate within the civil service believed to be behind the ghost workers syndrome for possible sanctions.
Responding on behalf of members, Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Tertsea Ikyaabo thanked the Governor for the confidence reposed in them and promised to carry out the assignment with all sense of commitment.
The Salary Verification Committee has three months to submit its report.
