A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, has announced his withdrawal from the Edo State governorship race following the tragic death of his son in the United States.
Agbonayinma, who previously represented the Egor/Ikpoba-Okha federal constituency in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019, conveyed his decision to step down to his party members and supporters on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
The politician cited his inability to muster the requisite focus and mental readiness required for political campaigns and rallies in Edo due to the recent loss of his son, Osazuwa Michael Agbonayinma, a 23-year-old music artiste known as Zuwa, who was fatally shot in Houston, Texas, USA, on January 7.
Agbonayinma expressed profound grief over the tragic event, emphasizing the profound impact it has had on him and his family. “This is a very bitter experience that cannot be wished even upon an enemy,” he lamented.
“After careful deliberation and consultation with various stakeholders, including family, friends, party leaders, and community representatives, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial campaign at this time,” Agbonayinma stated. “My family and I need time to grieve and heal.”
He extended heartfelt appreciation to all those who had supported his candidacy, both morally and financially, throughout his political journey. Additionally, as a committed member of the APC, Agbonayinma urged party leaders and supporters to rally behind the eventual flag bearer selected through a transparent and credible process.
“In unity, our party will emerge stronger, and we will collectively strive towards the betterment of Edo State,” he concluded.
