Football lovers in Otukpo were treated to a beautiful game of on Sunday at the Jesus College football field, as Success Academy trashed Otobi Heroes 4-0 in a thrilling encounter marking the opening match of the Chairman’s Cup Tournament.
The encounter which which saw the display of raw talents by the young footballers kicked off by 4:20pm. In the 5th minutes the first goal of the tournament was recorded after Success academy Jersey number 2 defender, Joseph Ohoda sloted in a nice pass from a set piece past the Otobi Heroes keeper. The second goal of the encounter came in 29 minutes after and was scored by Augustine Atama, with jersey number 14, to keep the scores 2-0 by the end of first half.
At the start of the second half, Otobi Heroes came up stronger, but where unlucky after missing an opportunity to reduce the tally. After two substitutes were introduced Otobi Heroes continued to mount pressure, but a well coordinated Success Academy side denied them any goal scoring chance. In the 65th minutes of the game, Success Academy increased their goal haul to 3-0. Otobi Heroes woes was compounded when they were reduced to 10 men after their goalkeeper was sent off. Success Academy capitalized on the one man deficit by increasing the goal tally to 4, shortly before the game ended.
The Director of Sports, Benue State Sports Council, Mr. Phillip Nongu, who thanked the Otukpo Local Government Council Chairman for organizing the event, expressed satisfaction with the level of football played by the young lads and said they are many players with potentials in the two teams that played.
The tournament was put together by the Executive Chairman of Otukpo LG, Rt. Hon. George Alli, for the purpose of discovering football playing talents in Otukpo. The Chairman said he also recognized football as a veritable tool for fostering unity and curbing youth restiveness .
