Another fire outbreak has hit a section of the Otukpo main market, close to Lagos line, on Wednesday morning, November 25th and destroyed goods worth millions of Naira.

The fire, according to witnesses, started and quickly spread due to the dry weather, as traders struggled to quench the fire before the timely arrival of men of the Otukpo Fire Service who put it off.

Reacting to the development, the Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Rt. Hon. George Alli, expressed sadness over the incident and sympathised with the traders and commended the Otukpo fire service for their quick intervention.

“This development is sad! I sympathise with the traders of the affected shops and feel their loss in this trying times. I thank God that no life was lost. I want to also commend men of the Otukpo Fire Service for quickly responding to the calls to contain the fire”.

“Going forward we will have to stamp our feet and restructure the market to allow fire service truck and other equipments free movement within the market like we are currently doing with the burnt shops we are rebuilding. This will safeguard lives and properties of traders and customers in the market in the event of emergency”, Alli stated further.

It will be recalled that about 200 shops at the “Lagos Line” sections of the Otukpo main market was raised by fire on March 16th, 2020, destroying goods worth millions of Naira. Those shops are currently being rebuilt.
