A tragic incident at Lebechi Hospital in Owerri, Imo State, has sparked outrage after a doctor allegedly watched a YouTube tutorial while performing a Caesarean section, resulting in the death of both a pregnant woman and her baby.
The bereaved husband, Onyekachi Eze, shared the heartbreaking story in a video posted on Instagram by Nollywood producer Stanley Ontop. Eze explained that he took his wife, who was in labor, to the hospital, where doctors determined she needed an emergency C-section due to excessive bleeding.
However, Eze was horrified to find the medical staff watching a YouTube video on how to perform the surgery.
“Right in my presence, they were using their phones to watch a YouTube video on how to perform surgery. I lost my wife and my baby during the process,” he said in the video.
Following public outcry, law enforcement intervened and arrested the hospital owner. A second video from Ontop confirmed the arrest, stating, “The owner of the hospital where doctors were watching YouTube on how to perform surgery has been arrested.”
While some nurses have been detained, the doctors responsible for the botched surgery have reportedly fled, with police intensifying efforts to locate them.
The incident has raised serious concerns over medical negligence and the lack of regulation in healthcare practices in the state.
