Over 123,000 displaced in Gaza amid ongoing Hamas, Israel war – Reports UN

The United Nations stated on Monday that more than 123,000 people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip due to the conflict between Palestinian militants and Israel. The displacement is primarily attributed to fear, protection concerns, and the destruction of homes.

The UN’s humanitarian agency, OCHA, reported that over 73,000 individuals are seeking shelter in schools, many of which have been designated as emergency shelters. The conflict intensified after Hamas militants launched deadly attacks in Israel and fired thousands of rockets at the country.

Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesman for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), expects the displacement numbers to increase. He highlighted the support provided in these shelters, including electricity, meals, clean water, psychological support, and medical treatment.

Gaza, with a population of 2.3 million Palestinians, has been under a severe Israeli blockade since 2007 when Hamas took power.
