The Deputy Chairman of Riyom Local Government Area in Plateau State, Gwong Song, has confirmed that more than 30 natives of the council lost their lives following a terrorist attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, on February 3, 2026.

Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Song disclosed that the victims were mostly indigenes of Ganawuri community who had travelled to Kwara for farming and other commercial activities when the assailants struck.

He further revealed that the attack forced hundreds of residents to flee, with initial figures indicating over 500 displaced persons. However, updated reports show that the number has climbed to 707.

While some have since made their way back home, others remain stranded in Kwara.

According to the deputy chairman, about 200 affected indigenes have returned after the council chairman provided N3 million to facilitate their transportation back to Plateau State.

“Those who have returned are managing to put up with their loved ones. As it is right now, we are going to have a meeting with the executive chairman regarding this because we are organising a special day for those who lost their lives,” Song said.

“We have about 30 of them that lost their lives, and as a community, it is very painful for us. We are organising the special day on Thursday in their honour and remembrance,” he added.

Song clarified that the returnees are not being housed in formal Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps but are instead staying with relatives and family members following the destruction caused by the attack.

He also disclosed that four injured members of the community are currently receiving medical treatment in Kwara, while about 10 others remain in captivity.
