An airstrike, reportedly conducted by Israel, struck Al-Ahi Baptist Hospital in Gaza on Tuesday, resulting in a tragic loss of at least 500 lives. Palestinian health officials reported that the hospital was filled with injured patients and individuals seeking shelter.
Gaza City’s hospitals have become havens for many people seeking refuge from the ongoing bombings, as Israel intensifies its airstrikes following Hamas’ incursion into the country on October 7. The conflict has claimed over 1,000 lives and resulted in approximately 200 people being held hostage.
Israel initiated substantial air raids on Gaza as part of Operation Iron Sword, pledging to reduce Gaza to ruins.
Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that there were no specific details available regarding the hospital deaths. He added, “We will obtain the details and keep the public informed. I can’t confirm at this time whether it was an Israeli airstrike.”
Shortly afterward, an IDF source attributed the incident, which sparked global condemnation, to Hamas, claiming the group mistakenly targeted the hospital.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, labeling it as unacceptable and illegal.
U.S. officials worked to persuade Israel to allow the delivery of supplies to desperate civilians, aid organizations, and hospitals, following several days of failed attempts to secure a break in the siege.
