Panic in Benue as butchers resort to roasting cows, goats with tyres

For decades, an unhealthy and hazardous method of meat processing has been practiced in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, where scrap tyres are burned to shear goats, cows, and other animals.

Despite clear health risks, the practice has continued, raising concerns among health experts and government officials.

Health experts have condemned the practice as harmful and a significant public health threat. Dr. David Terna, a medical practitioner, highlighted that the smoke from burning tyres releases toxic chemicals such as carbon monoxide, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. These substances can contaminate the meat and cause severe health issues, including cancer, respiratory diseases, and organ damage.

Additionally, the process contributes to air pollution, with soot increasing the risk of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. Butchers themselves are not spared, as they are exposed daily to harmful fumes.

At the Wurukum Abattoir, butchers like Idris argue that using tyres makes the process faster and more efficient. Idris claimed, “After burning, we thoroughly wash the meat to remove any residue.” However, health officials dispute this claim, warning that no amount of washing can eliminate the chemical deposits.

The Benue State Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have both acknowledged the problem. Mrs. Esther Menger, Director of Public Health, promised an urgent awareness campaign and stronger enforcement to stop the practice. Meanwhile, Prof. Moses Ogbaji, the Commissioner for Agriculture, confirmed a ban on the use of tyres and pledged stricter inspections and arrests of violators.

Despite these efforts, the lack of alternative methods for animal shearing remains a significant obstacle. While the government has expressed intentions to address the issue, tangible solutions or new technologies have yet to be introduced.

As residents and health experts call for immediate action, the need for education, enforcement, and sustainable alternatives becomes increasingly urgent. The continued use of tyres for meat processing poses a severe threat not only to public health but also to the environment, and comprehensive measures are essential to bring this harmful practice to an end.
