Human rights lawyer Effiong Inibehe has called on Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), to step back from defending President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Inibehe made this statement in response to Pastor Adeboye’s remarks crediting his prayers for preventing the naira’s collapse to ₦10,000 per dollar. Adeboye also commended President Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy, describing it as a solution to Nigeria’s financial challenges.
Criticizing the pastor’s comments, Inibehe advised Adeboye to “retire and go home,” accusing him of misleading Nigerians regarding the government’s handling of the subsidy issue.
“Pastor Enoch Adeboye should step aside. His recent statements on national issues are deeply troubling to discerning members of society,” Inibehe said.
He accused Adeboye of legitimizing an “incompetent and oppressive government,” which he argued undermines the essence of Christianity.
Inibehe further claimed that the government continues to pay billions in fuel subsidies, despite public assertions to the contrary.
“It’s absurd for Adeboye to attribute the naira’s stability to his prayers. Exchange rates are influenced by economic policies and productivity, not divine intervention,” he asserted.
The lawyer added that decades of prayers by Adeboye for Nigeria have not yielded significant improvements, questioning their effectiveness or divine reception. He also criticized religious leaders for their alleged hypocrisy and alignment with corrupt politicians, suggesting this has led many Nigerians to lose faith in religious institutions.
“Some of the most corrupt leaders in the country today are followers of Pastor Adeboye,” he concluded.
