The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a move to suspend Senator Dino Melaye, labeling him a liability to the party.
Led by Ibrahim Dansofo, PDP elders in the state have urged the local executive committee in Ijumu to begin immediate suspension proceedings against Melaye. According to them, this step is crucial to restoring the party’s integrity and ensuring it focuses on effective leadership.
Melaye, on Saturday, accused the acting national chairman of the PDP, Iliya Damagum, along with Samuel Anyanwu and Umar Bature, of irreparably destroying the former ruling party.
In response, the party elders condemned Melaye’s remarks, asserting that his political career has diminished to the extent that he can no longer secure even a local councillor position.
The Dansofo-led elders portrayed Melaye as a burden, claiming that his continued presence in the PDP serves only to negotiate personal gains with the ruling party rather than to contribute positively to the party’s progress.
“Senator Melaye has become a burden to the party. His accusations against the current leadership are hypocritical, as he himself was granted a governorship ticket despite the party’s awareness of his inability to win even a primary election,” said Dansofo.
The Kogi PDP attributed the party’s current challenges to Melaye’s nomination, calling it a significant misstep that has led to their current struggles.
They urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to reconsider their support for Melaye, urging them to distance themselves from someone they described as a “bondage” and a “big-time liability” for the party.
The party further called on the Nigerian public to disregard Melaye’s remarks, describing them as the desperate words of a politician whose relevance has faded.
The Kogi PDP emphasized its determination to move forward, reclaim its strength, and rebuild its reputation as a formidable political force in the state. They also called on Melaye to account for the billions he allegedly collected under the guise of running for governor.
