PDP office remains sealed 48 hours after Tinubu’s reopening order

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has yet to comply with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to reopen the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national headquarters, 48 hours after the presidential order.

When our correspondent visited the PDP’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, both entrances to the building remained locked and sealed. Staff and private security personnel were seen idling around, unable to access the premises.

The secretariat was among several properties sealed on Monday around 2:06 p.m. by an FCTA taskforce over unpaid ground rent. The administration had previously announced plans to reclaim 4,794 properties, including the PDP headquarters, for defaulting on rent payments for periods ranging from 10 to 43 years — a debt reportedly totaling ₦6.96 billion.

Reacting to the development on Monday, PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, during a National Caucus meeting in Abuja, described the action as “irresponsible” and accused the Federal Government of political harassment.

However, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Mr. Lere Olayinka, defended the operation, insisting it was purely administrative and legally backed, not politically motivated.

Following public backlash, President Tinubu ordered the immediate unsealing of the affected properties and directed that a 14-day grace period be given to allow property owners, including the PDP, to settle outstanding dues.

Despite the order, the PDP office remains sealed. A party source told The PUNCH that internal efforts are ongoing to resolve the matter and ensure the headquarters is reopened soon.
