PDP: Wike, BoT chairman at war over National Secretary position

A conflict has emerged within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as Adolphus Wabara, the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, and former Rivers State governor and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, clash over the demand for the resignation of the party’s national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.

Wabara, in a letter to the PDP acting national chairman, had urged for Anyanwu’s resignation, citing concerns about his dual role as the party’s candidate in the Imo State governorship election while serving as national secretary. Wabara emphasized the need to focus on the election, scheduled for November 11.

However, Wike countered Wabara’s stance, asserting that the BoT lacked the moral authority to intervene in the matter of who holds the office of the national secretary. He argued that the responsibility for filling a vacancy in the position lay with the entire Southern States to which the position was zoned, not just the South East geopolitical zone.

Wike further urged the party to avoid internal conflicts that could undermine PDP’s preparations for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa states.

In response, Wabara affirmed his actions, pointing to the PDP constitution’s provisions and highlighting that everyone is entitled to their opinion. The clash reveals ongoing tensions and disagreements within the party, raising concerns about unity and cohesion ahead of crucial elections.
