Peace Corps of Nigeria achieves another great feat (SEE PHOTOS)

The Hajia Aisha Buhari’s special school for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Vulnerable Children, located in Gwarimpa, Abuja, has been without electricity service for the past 3 weeks, DAILY POST is reporting.

This was made known on Thursday, when the National Commandant of Nigerian Peace Corps, Amb. (Dr.) Dickson Akoh visited the camp, to donate relieved materials to the school children.
Hajia Buhari’s IDPs school in Gwarimpa was established on the 9th of January, 2017, following the mounting figures of ‘out of school’ children, occasioned by the insurgencies in the North-East region of Nigeria.

A visit to the IDPs school, however, revealed that, the school premises has been without electricity for some times, the development which led to the children going across the main road to fetch water, as the main reservoir in the camp was hinged on electricity.

Addressing the National Commandant and other officers of the Corps, the Principal of the school, Mr. Ben Onwudinjo, appreciated the effort of the Nigerian Peace Corps, for donating to the camp, adding that, the Corps was one of the few organisations and individuals that identified with the school, since it was adopted by the Wife of the President.

He also craved for opportunities for the able students to be enrolled in the Peace Corps, even as he canvassed that “Special Volunteer Corps Marshall”  be established in the school by the Peace Corps.

“Many of the IDP children love the Peace Corps of Nigeria and would love to join. I therefore seize this special privilege to request that you kindly approve and fix a date to come and inaugurate the Special Volunteer Corps Marshals of the Peace Corps of Nigeria for the Hajia Aisha Buhari Special School for the IDPs and Vulnerable Children, Abuja”, he said.

In his goodwill message, the National Commandant of Nigerian Peace Corps, Amb. (Dr.) Dickson Akoh, thanked Hajia Aisha Buhari, for adopting the school and also using her pet project to restore hope to the “vulnerable and under-privileged children, who were displaced unconditionally, lost their parents and rendered homeless”.

Dickson Akoh, who was represented by the Deputy National Commandant, Finance and Account, Patriot Omolola Ahmmed, promised to look into the requests made by the management of the school, which also include, the restoration of electricity to the school premises.

Akoh, who expressed great concern over the spate of IDPs and out of school children, also added that, the Peace Corps deemed it as part of its corporate social responsibilities, to “engage in national advocacy that engenders youth development and nation-building”.

“Factors that bring about vulnerability of children vis-à-vis internally displaced persons should be vehemently kicked against, as every child deserves a home and the right to be loved”, he added.

On the pending Bill for the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps, the National Commandant said he was optimistic that President Muhammadu Buhari would “speedily and convincingly assent to the Bill”, even as he said, he was with high hope that, the President would soon return to the country in good health.

In their separate remarks, the President of Concept Group of Schools, the Founder of the IDPs school, Abuja, Amb. (Dr.) Marcel Enzenwoye and the Director General, JEM Royal Foundation, Dame Pastor Edith Anyigwo; appreciated the Nigerian Peace Corps, for donating to the IDPs.

While calling on other NGOs to emulate the humanitarian gesture of the Corps, the duo also solicited for friendly football match between the Peace Corps and the school children, stressing that partnership in the extracurricular activities would also go along way to improve the psychology of the children.

Materials donated include, food items, toiletries, writing materials and other domestic necessities.
