Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and the women’s national Under-17 football team, the Flamingoes, have received commendation from Super Eagles head coach, Peseiro , in light of their qualification for continental and international competitions.
On Tuesday, the Golden Eaglets came from behind to upset regional rivals, Ivory Coast, 3-1 in the semifinal of the WAFU B U-17 Championship in Ghana. With the victory, the five-time youth champions secured their place at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria.
Earlier, the Flamingoes defeated Ethiopia 1-0 on aggregate on June 4, to become one of Africa’s representatives in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India in October.
It has been a successful month for all national teams. The Golden Eaglets have won three straight games, the Flamingoes defeated Ethiopia 1-0, before being held to a scoreless draw at home, and the Super Eagles have triumphed over Sierra Leone and Sao Tomé and Principe with no team recording any losses.
The Golden Eaglets and Flamingoes represent the future of Nigerian football, according to Peseiro, who has urged Nigerian supporters to support them. The Portuguese football tactician tweeted the following this morning:
“Congratulations to both the Nigerian U17 women’s and men’s teams for qualifying to World Cup and AFCON, respectively. They are the future of Nigerian football and deserve our full support!”
