On Friday, the legal team representing Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirmed that they had obtained the Certified True Copies of the judgment from the Presidential Election Petition Court. Similarly, the legal team of Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) flagbearer in the February 25, 2023 election, also acknowledged receiving these documents.
Recalling recent events, the presidential tribunal had recently dismissed the petition filed by Atiku and Obi challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the election.
In response to this court ruling, both Atiku and Obi expressed their intention to take the matter to the Supreme Court. Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), the lead counsel for Peter Obi, confirmed over the phone that he had received a copy of the judgment, adding that it was currently being scanned.
Similarly, Chris Uche (SAN), the lead counsel for Atiku, confirmed the receipt of the judgment when responding to a text message, stating, “Yes; we have just received it.”
Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communications, Phrank Shaibu, criticized the Presidential Election Petition Court for allegedly delaying the release of the Certified True Copies of the judgment to Atiku Abubakar’s legal team. Shaibu asserted that this delay was undermining Atiku’s and Nigerians’ pursuit of justice.
On Friday, a copy of the judgment circulated widely on social media. This 798-page document was signed by the Secretary of the Presidential Election Petition Court and dated September 8, 2023.
