Peter Obi backs Tinubu’s tax reform bill, calls for public hearings

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bill, emphasising its importance as a critical issue.

IDOMA VOICE reports that Tinubu’s proposed four tax reform bills have sparked controversy in Northern Nigeria, with regional groups and leaders, including Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, calling for a suspension of the legislation. Zulum argued that only Lagos and Rivers states stand to benefit if the bills are enacted.

In response, the presidency clarified that the reforms aim to streamline tax administration and create a more business-friendly environment.

In a statement shared via X on Monday, Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, noted that while pursuing tax reform is necessary, it must involve meaningful public engagement. He stressed the importance of conducting public hearings to gather diverse input and build trust in the process.

“Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate,” Obi said. “A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.”

Obi cautioned against rushing significant reforms, emphasizing the need for transparency, deliberation, and public engagement. He also highlighted the importance of considering the broader impact on all regions of the country, not just revenue generation for the government.

“Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful consideration—they should never be rushed. Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs,” he added. “When considering tax reforms and similar issues, we must also take into account the overall impact on the nation and the sustainability of all its regions.”

Obi concluded by urging the government to prioritize sensitizing the public and securing their support for any policy changes, emphasizing that trust and legitimacy are crucial for effective governance. “Let us prioritize transparency, deliberation, and public engagement in charting the path forward. This is how we build a truly participatory democracy,” he said.
