Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has criticized the purported deportation of Osun natives from Lagos State by the state government.
Reports emerged on Saturday indicating that Osun indigenes were being rounded up by police officers from various areas including Ajah, TBS, and Lagos Island for deportation.
In response to these events, Obi took to his social media platform to denounce the deportations as a flagrant violation of citizens’ rights.
“The recent reports of Osun indigenes being deported by Lagos State authorities are deeply troubling. This is not just an issue for Osun State; it concerns all Nigerians who value unity, fairness, and justice,” Obi said.
“I find this action particularly concerning due to its potential to harm our national unity and development. As a proponent of national unity, I staunchly oppose any discrimination, injustice, or violation of citizens’ rights.
“Every Nigerian, regardless of their origin or place of residence, deserves dignity and respect,” he emphasized.
“We must remember that we are all Nigerians, bound by a common destiny. It is our collective responsibility to uphold unity, fairness, and justice, and to resist all forms of discrimination and injustice. Our constitution guarantees every Nigerian citizen the right to live and work anywhere within the federation.
“I urge all Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant as we await the results of the investigation. Meanwhile, security agencies in Osun State are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the deported youths’ safety and well-being.
“Together, let us work towards a Nigeria where every citizen is treated with dignity and respect, irrespective of their background or place of residence. A better Nigeria is indeed attainable! Let us pursue it united,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged deportations and engaged with Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos, who also expressed shock and pledged swift action. Adeleke urged residents to remain calm while security agencies conducted their inquiries.
