Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, alongside his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmad, have donated ₦50 million to assist victims of the recent floods in Maiduguri.
The donation was made during a visit by the Labour Party leadership and the Obidient Movement to the Borno State capital, where they expressed their sympathy over the devastating floods that occurred the previous week.
Obi was joined on the trip by key figures, including the National Chairman of the Party’s caretaker committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, Datti Baba-Ahmad, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, and other party leaders.
A statement issued by Ibrahim Umar, the spokesperson for Peter Obi Media Reach, noted that the ₦50 million was an initial contribution to the state government’s emergency relief fund.
During their visit, the Labour Party leadership also met with Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, as well as His Highness the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi.
In addition to these meetings, the group toured the Bank of the North spare parts market, which was heavily affected by the floods, visited an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp at Government College, and consoled a woman who tragically lost her newborn twins to the disaster.
The Labour Party reiterated its commitment to supporting those impacted by the floods, with Obi pledging further assistance beyond the initial ₦50 million donation. “We will continue to stand by the people of Borno, providing support to help them rebuild and recover,” Obi said.
Obi also expressed his gratitude to the various levels of government, especially the Borno State government, for their ongoing efforts to aid those affected. He offered prayers for the victims and wished for the speedy recovery of those still in hospital, adding, “May God continue to bless Borno State and Nigeria as we move forward from this tragedy.”
