Obi questions Tinubu’s absence from 81st UN General Assembly
The Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York.
Obi raised the concern on Sunday in a post on his X handle. He spoke after watching an address by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at the global gathering.
In a statement by his media office spokesman, Idris Zekeri, Obi asked why Tinubu was not present at the UNGA.
The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria should have its President represented at major international events. He cited the country’s population and position in Africa.
Obi compared Tinubu’s absence with Mahama’s participation at the gathering.
He said, “This is the remarkable address delivered by Ghana’s dynamic President, John Dramani Mahama, at the 81st UNGA. As the international community commends this distinguished leader, many Nigerians are asking: Where is the President of Africa’s most populous nation?”
Obi also questioned Tinubu’s absence from the UNGA over the past three editions.
He said Nigeria needed presidential representation amid several domestic and international challenges.
“Although Vice President Kashim Shettima was present, Nigerians are still asking where their President is. This is especially important at a time when the country faces serious challenges,” Obi said.
The Presidency announced on September 21 that Tinubu had extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days.
It said the President was expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend.
Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for London before travelling to Paris, France. During the trip, he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bollore.
The Presidency said Tinubu remained in contact with government officials at home. It also said he continued to direct the affairs of the country while abroad.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Tinubu at the 81st UNGA.
Shettima led Nigeria’s delegation to the gathering. He also delivered Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday.
Obi called for continued prayers for Tinubu’s return and effective leadership.
He said, “Let us continue to pray for his return and for the leadership needed to address the many challenges confronting the nation. We remain hopeful that a New Nigeria is possible and will be O-K.”
