Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, expressed surprise at the turn of events that led to the appointment of his second deputy governor during his tenure in office. The governor made these remarks during the swearing-in ceremony of Omobayo Marvellous Godwins as the new deputy governor, succeeding Philip Shaibu who was impeached by members of the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, April 8, 2024.
Quoting from the book of Proverbs 16:9, Obaseki emphasized the principle that despite one’s plans, it is ultimately God who directs actions. He stated, “We have run a very interesting and eventful tenure since we took office in 2016 and gained your trust to continue on our mandate for another term in 2020, and at no point in this journey did I envisage that I will be having to work with two deputy governors before the end of my eight-year run in office.”
Acknowledging that there cannot be a vacuum in government, Obaseki explained the necessity of the new appointment, saying, “But as the Bible says in Proverb 16: 9: ‘You may make your plans, but it is God that directs your actions.”
Reflecting on recent events in the legislative arm of government, particularly the exercise of their constitutional role in providing checks and balances, Governor Obaseki remarked, “Today, we have arrived at this difficult but inevitable juncture.”
Obaseki praised the qualities of the newly appointed deputy governor, Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, describing him as a dedicated young professional. He expressed confidence that Godwins’ appointment would provide the impetus needed to unite the various interests within the state towards achieving the government’s vision for a vibrant, prosperous Edo State.
Highlighting the significance of youth empowerment in his administration’s agenda, Governor Obaseki portrayed the 38-year-old Godwins as a symbol of the government’s commitment to placing young people at the forefront of political and developmental initiatives.
Describing Godwins as the right person for the current season, Governor Obaseki assured that they would work closely together in the remaining months of his administration to fulfill promises and leave a positive impact for the benefit of the people of Edo State.
