Philippe Clement appointed as Rangers new head coach

Rangers welcomed Philippe Clement as their new manager on Sunday. The Belgian secured a three-and-a-half year contract at Ibrox.

Following the dismissal of Michael Beale earlier this month, with Rangers lagging seven points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership standings.

“I am honoured to have been appointed as the new manager of Rangers,” said Clement in a club statement.

“I am hugely excited by this chance to achieve success at one of Europe’s most iconic clubs across four competitions in what remains of this season and beyond.”

Clement achieved a remarkable feat by clinching three consecutive Belgian titles while managing first Genk and then Club Brugge from 2018 to 2021.

The 49-year-old embarked on a stint at Monaco from January 2022 to June this year. However, his time at the club ended after a disappointing sixth-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.

In Glasgow, his immediate objective is to break Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football. The Hoops have secured 11 of the last 12 Scottish Premiership titles and currently hold a significant lead, just eight games into the new season.

Despite a recent setback with an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Aris Limassol in Cyprus earlier this month, Rangers still have the opportunity for progress in the Europa League.

Clement may soon have the chance to secure a trophy, as his new team is set to face Hearts in the League Cup semi-final next month. Rangers stand as strong contenders to win the trophy, especially with holders Celtic already out of the competition.

The club’s chairman, John Bennett, revealed that former Rangers manager Graeme Souness played a role in the recruitment process, participating in candidate interviews for the managerial position.

He added: “Philippe proved to be the outstanding candidate across all the key criteria, reinforced by his track record of winning titles and I wish him every success as he leads us forward.”
