Police arrest stepmother whose son buried stepbrother alive over ₦10,000 in kogi

Police in Kogi State have taken into custody the stepmother of an 11-year-old boy who was buried alive by her 17-year-old son. The arrest came following a shocking incident in which the 11-year-old was buried by his stepbrother in a forest at Silo community, Zango Daji, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi.

The tragic event was reportedly triggered by an accusation that the 11-year-old had stolen ₦10,000 belonging to his stepmother. The stepmother instructed her son to punish the boy before leaving for church.

As a result, the 17-year-old took his stepbrother into the forest, where he buried him alive. Passers-by later discovered and rescued the boy, causing widespread shock and disbelief in Kogi.

According to SP Williams Ovye-Aya, the Police spokesperson in Kogi, the stepmother was arrested on Thursday upon her return from church. She was taken into police custody and has provided a statement regarding the incident.

The 17-year-old suspect had been arrested earlier. The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the reasons behind such cruelty within a family. The father, who is the family’s breadwinner, is reportedly away, and the police are awaiting his return to provide a statement.

In response to the incident, the Kogi government has pledged to prosecute the 17-year-old and the mother. Hajiya Fatima Buba, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, called the incident “very wicked” and “saddening.” She assured that the ministry is working closely with the police to ensure the immediate prosecution of the mother and son.
