The Benue State Police apprehended Sughshater Ushahemba for the alleged poisoning of her 11-month-old baby with a lethal substance intended for grass treatment.
Ushahemba, a resident of Mbadyur council ward in Logo local government area, was confirmed to be in custody by the State Police Spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene.
According to reports, the woman purportedly fed the baby a substance suspected to be a chemical early on Saturday, resulting in the child’s demise.
A source cited the woman claiming the baby developed a high fever and passed away during the early hours of Saturday.
Allegedly caught while attempting to bury the baby, the woman had previously told others that the infant fell ill around 12:31 am and succumbed two hours later.
However, Logo Local Government Area’s Information Officer, Paul Pevikyaa, informed the press that the woman later confessed to the act, attributing it to being abandoned by the man who fathered the child.
The information officer relayed that the woman was impregnated by her boyfriend, who deserted her after she gave birth to a baby girl. She explained that she had struggled alone with the child, prompting her to administer a poisonous substance, typically used for grass spraying, to the infant.
