Police dismiss Sowore’s claims on IGP Egbetokun’s tenure as false

The Nigeria Police Force has strongly denied recent claims by Omoyele Sowore suggesting that the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, is illegal.

The police described these allegations as baseless and misleading, aimed at undermining the legitimacy of the IGP’s appointment and public confidence in law enforcement.

According to the police, IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is legally sound and backed by the Police Act, 2020 (as amended). Section 7(6) of the Act clearly states that an Inspector-General of Police shall serve a four-year term.

His appointment was ratified by the Police Council, and he received official confirmation from the Presidency, securing his tenure from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027. The amendment to the Act ensures leadership stability within the police force, allowing the IGP to execute long-term policies without fear of premature removal.

The police warned against the spread of misinformation that could erode public trust and compromise national security.

They urged citizens to engage in constructive discourse that supports efforts to maintain law and order rather than propagate false narratives.
