Police IGP condemns Otukpo bank robbery, promises swift action

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a resounding condemnation of the recent armed bank robbery that took place in Otukpo, Benue State. The robbery led to the tragic loss of lives, including police officers and innocent civilians.

This audacious attack, carried out by daring armed robbers, resulted in the loss of three police officers and multiple innocent civilians. In a statement released on Saturday, Police Spokesman ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi decried this act of violence as an assault on the principles of peace, security, and justice that the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies are committed to upholding.

The IGP extended his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, who were senselessly affected by this violent act. Notably, two of the suspects were apprehended by police operatives while attempting to escape. The assailants who orchestrated this audacious criminal act have, in the words of the IGP, “murdered sleep,” leaving the Otukpo community deeply shaken.

IGP Egbetokun has reassured the public that every available resource and effort will be employed to swiftly apprehend and bring the culprits to justice.

In response to this grave incident, the Nigeria Police Force has initiated a comprehensive and coordinated effort to ensure the perpetrators of this heinous crime face justice. Additional operational and investigative assets and resources have been deployed to Otukpo, the Benue State Command, and surrounding areas, with the aim of swiftly apprehending the other fleeing criminals responsible for this atrocity. This follows the successful gunning down of two of the armed robbers after a hot chase on Friday.

The IGP has placed all Commands and Formations on red alert in light of this incident, with the intent of preventing any further deadly attacks on institutions and innocent citizens, especially in the run-up to the Ember Months—a period often characterized by bank robberies and related crimes.

The public is urged to remain calm and collaborate with authorities by providing any information that can aid in the investigation and pursuit of the suspects. Such assistance is invaluable in the mission to restore safety and security in the affected area and throughout Nigeria.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, the IGP has restated the NPF’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of the Nigerian people. The police force stands united against acts of violence and criminality, pledging to work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for this reprehensible act face justice.
