Police rescue suspected motorcycle thief from lynching in Makurdi
Operatives of the Benue State Police Command on Thursday rescued a young man from being lynched by an angry mob in Makurdi, after he was allegedly caught attempting to rob an okada rider of his motorcycle.
The incident occurred near Angus Fraser College, in the Owner Occupier Quarters Extension area of the state capital.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect and his gang had tried to dispossess a commercial motorcycle rider when vigilant residents raised an alarm. A chase followed, during which the suspects reportedly fell off their bike. While two of them managed to escape, one was not so lucky.
“A tyre had already been placed around his neck, and the crowd was ready to set him on fire when the police arrived just in time,” a witness who preferred to remain anonymous told IDOMA VOICE.
The police quickly intervened, dispersing the crowd and taking the suspect into custody.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, CSP Catherine Anene, for official comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
