Police resume nationwide issuance of tinted glass permits

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially resumed the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) across the country via a newly launched, secure, and user-friendly online platform accessible at possap.gov.ng.

According to a statement by police spokesperson CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, the initiative follows public outcry over the harassment of motorists with factory-fitted tinted windows. The move aims to establish a transparent and accountable system that regularizes the legitimate use of tinted glasses while enhancing public safety.

“With modern vehicles increasingly coming with factory-installed tinted windows, it has become necessary to adopt a structured permit process that balances lawful usage with national security needs,” the statement read.

Adejobi explained that criminals often exploit tinted vehicles for illegal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and ‘one-chance’ scams—hindering police visibility and law enforcement. The reactivation of the permit system, he said, is part of a broader strategy to distinguish lawful users (such as individuals with medical needs and security personnel) from those using tinted windows for criminal intent.

Applicants can now obtain permits online with integrated identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN), Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric data capture, and thorough background checks. The new system includes QR-coded digital permits and promises a processing time of just 72 hours.

To allow a smooth transition, the police have granted a 30-day grace period starting May 1, 2025, for motorists to comply with the new regulations. Enforcement will begin after the grace period lapses.

Adejobi also warned that any officer found engaging in extortion or harassment during enforcement would face strict disciplinary actions in line with existing police codes of conduct.

The issuance of tinted glass permits was previously suspended in June 2021 by former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba. Last year, the police hinted at reinstating the process, which has now been formally relaunched.
