Tension gripped the Igueomo community along the Benin-Agbor Road as a man reportedly fell victim to a stray bullet allegedly fired by the police in the area.

The incident unfolded on a Wednesday evening when the deceased, identified as a Hausa man, visited a POS operator to transfer N4000 to his wife in his village. Reports from City & Crime indicate that a confrontation between some hoodlums and the police prompted the law enforcement officers to swoop in for arrests. During the pursuit, gunshots were fired at the fleeing individuals, inadvertently hitting the victim, who was seeking refuge, leading to his immediate death.

According to a source, after transferring the funds to his wife, the deceased became aware of the turmoil in the vicinity and attempted to run to safety, only to be struck by the stray bullet.

In response to the tragic incident, enraged youths in the area took to the streets, blocking the road in protest against the unjust killing. Armed with sticks and machetes, they created a barricade, preventing access to both sides of the road. A police vehicle attempting to pass through was reportedly vandalized during the unrest.

The situation disrupted transportation, compelling many passengers to disembark from buses and traverse on foot to reach their destinations.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, when contacted, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations were underway to identify those involved in the police operation.
