Police take action over murder of lawyer Mark Ofikwu in Otukpo

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the tragic killing of prominent Otukpo-based lawyer and activist, Mark Ofikwu, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday night in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Superintendent Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer, expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, assuring the public that a thorough investigation was underway. “Justice will be served,” she pledged.

IDOMA VOICE reports that the incident occurred around 8 PM at the entrance of Ofikwu’s residence on Otukpa Street.

According to eyewitness accounts, Ofikwu had just returned home from work and was waiting for his gate to open when two armed men in a vehicle approached and shot him at close range before fleeing the scene.

An eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the attack as shocking and cinematic. “He had just arrived home and was waiting for the gate to open when the gunmen, who seemed to have been tailing him, drove up and shot him.

“The sound of the gunshot drew people to the scene, but he had already lost a lot of blood by the time he was rushed to the hospital,” the source recounted.

The death of the respected lawyer and activist has plunged the Idoma community into mourning, leaving many in disbelief and struggling to comprehend the motive behind the attack.

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
