A significant number of police personnel have taken positions around the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed members of the National Working Committee (NWC) looms. The atmosphere is charged, with police officers stationed strategically at the entrances of Blantyre Street, where the party headquarters is located. Despite this show of force, numerous protesters remain undeterred, as reported by Daily Sun.
The tension escalated with the arrival of Yahaya Bello, the Governor of Kogi State, in the early hours of the day. His presence further amplified the atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding the secretariat.
The focal point of contention revolves around the announcement of Mary Alile Idele from Edo State as the National Women Leader (South South Zone). This decision, endorsed by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, contrasts with the candidate of Dr. Stella Odey-Ekpo, supported by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Beta Edu.
The party’s decision also settled on Duro Meseko (Kogi State) as the new Deputy National Publicity Secretary (North Central Zone), replacing Yakubu Ajaka. Allegedly, this choice was made following a recommendation by James Faleke, which differs from the candidate recommended by Governor Bello.
Shortly after the announcement, Edu, the former Woman Leader, made her way to the national secretariat around 6.20pm to voice her protest against the removal of her candidate. This candidate had already begun assuming responsibilities, making the situation more complex.
Governor Bello, determined to pursue his cause, arrived at the secretariat in a G-Wagon vehicle and conveyed his unwavering stance to the press. He emphasized that he wouldn’t relent until the perceived error is rectified, stating, “This issue must be sorted out today.”
Despite the presence of armed police officers, protesters have continued to defy the situation, resulting in traffic congestion and commotion in the area.
