The Nigeria Police Force has expressed strong disapproval over the comedic portrayal of the police uniform in skits by Abdulgafar Abiola, a former Naval officer known as Cute Abiola. In two recent comedy skits posted on his social media platforms on July 20 and 24, 2023, the skit maker allegedly depicted the police force in a derogatory and disrespectful manner.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Thursday condemning the skits, citing that they violated Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. The police view the portrayal as highly disrespectful to the police uniform and consider it an offense.
In response to the depiction, the police have announced their intention to investigate Cute Abiola and potentially prosecute him for his deliberate acts. The Nigeria Police Force had previously issued warnings to skit makers and filmmakers against tarnishing the image of the police uniform or related equipment.
Adejobi urged Nigerians to exercise their freedom of expression responsibly and avoid actions that could undermine public trust in the country’s esteemed law enforcement institutions.
It is worth noting that Cute Abiola, after resigning from the Nigerian Navy in November of the previous year, pursued a career in comedy. He attributed his success in comedy to the discipline instilled in him during his service in the Navy.
