Police under fire for chasing Peace Corps trainees from orientation camp

READ ALSO: Police shut down Peace Corps orientation camp

A youth based forum under the umbrella of National Youths Democratic Congress (NYDC), has come hard on the Nigerian Police Force, for meddling with the lawful activities of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.

The Police authority in Kwara State, had on Friday, shut down the official camp of the Peace Corps, alleging that proper permission was not taken from the Command before embarking on the training.

Also, on Sunday, the FCT Command of the Police disrupted the Kubwa camp, where the Peace Corps of Nigeria was training its staff officers, discharging the cadets to go back home.
These recent developments prompted the reaction from the NYDC, which described the onslaught on the Peace Corps as “administrative recklessness” on the part of the Police.

In a statement signed by the group National Secretary, Comrade Wisdom Obekpa, the youths accused the Nigerian Police of playing “vindictive politics with the future of Nigerian youths”.

“This is nothing but sheer wickedness! The Nigerian Police is playing vindictive politics with the future of Nigerian youths. Anyone working against the future of the youths is an enemy of the youths.

“To the best of our knowledge, the Peace Corps of Nigeria has been engaging the youths on volunteerism and nation-building activities for almost 2 decades. We are also aware that, there are series of court judgements standing in support of the orientation programmes of the Corps. Why the sudden onslaught?

“This recent show of administrative recklessness on the part of the Police must stop. Our members across the country who apply for Police enrolment always find it difficult to scale through.
We know how it is done in Nigeria, but Peace Corps has helped to break that hegemony of middlemen and godfatherism. Now, they are reacting negatively,” the statement reads in part.
