Prepare for flood – FG warn Mabushi, Kurudu residents

Following persistent rainfall in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), heavy rain is expected in some areas of Abuja from July 21-25, 2024, potentially leading to flooding.

The affected locations include Mabushi District and Kurudu, a suburb of the capital.

This information was disclosed by the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre, Federal Ministry of Environment Abuja, in a statement to the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD).

In response to the early warning, the Acting Director General of FEMD, Mrs. Florence Dawon Wenegieme, has called on Facility Maintenance and Management to desilt blocked manholes in Mabushi District to ensure the free flow of water during heavy rains.

Mrs. Wenegieme also urged the Abuja Environmental Protection Board to clear all blocked drainages and remove waste in the district to mitigate the impact of flooding.

In a statement on Monday, Head of Public Affairs FEMD, Nkechi Isa, noted: “The Acting DG has called on the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) to clear all blocked drainages in Kurudu and evacuate solid waste dumped indiscriminately in the area.”

Furthermore, the Search and Rescue Team of the Department has been placed on alert in case of possible flooding.

Mrs. Wenegieme appealed to residents to heed early warnings issued by the Department to ensure the safety of lives and property. She also urged residents to use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of a disaster.
