Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of Anambra State Governor, urged women in the state to prioritise spending on “regular health checks and balanced diets” over “bleaching creams.” She stated the importance of investing in health rather than cosmetic products.
Addressing the 2nd Anambra State Women Health Summit, organized by her Healthy Living Initiative in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Awka, Soludo expressed concern over the low immunization rates in the state. She urged mothers to prioritize their children’s health by ensuring they receive vaccinations, which are free, safe, and effective.
Soludo noted the positive impact of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration’s free antenatal and delivery policy, which has significantly reduced maternal mortality. She called for similar progress in immunization coverage.
Soludo also urged women to embrace their natural skin color and invest in their health by avoiding excessive spending on bleaching creams. “Women should focus on regular health checks, balanced diets, and exercise to maintain their health and well-being,” she said.
Dr. Uju Obiagwu of the WHO highlighted the concerning decrease in immunization coverage in Anambra. She stressed the importance of vaccinations in preventing diseases such as measles, polio, and cholera and urged mothers to ensure their children are vaccinated to prevent outbreaks.
Anambra’s WHO Coordinator, Dr. Mohamed Bonos, commended the state government for its efforts to improve public health, while Prof. Brian Adinma, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, encouraged women to prioritize their reproductive health.
Dr. Afam Obidike, Commissioner for Health in Anambra, emphasized that the health summit demonstrated the state government’s commitment to the well-being of women and children.
