‘Problem has changed name’ – Oby Ezekwesili reacts as police introduce SWAT to replace SARS
Former Vice President of the World Bank’s Africa division and former Nigerian Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, on Tuesday, reacted to the establishment of the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) to replace to recently abolished Federal Special Anti-Robbery (FSARS) unit of the Nigeria police force by the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu.
According to the former Presidential assistant, nothing substantial has changed.
She said just the name has been changed.
She tweeted, “Problem has changed name.”
Nigeria is currently going a widespread online and offline protest against police brutality following the incessant brutalization and extra-judicial killings by men of the now abolished FSARS.
While the country’s police chief has announced the disbandment of the unit, protesters are still taking to the streets and the internet to protest police brutality over government continuous failure to permanently overhaul the police unit rather than changing of name and repackaging as against reform or total overhauling.
