Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu CON SAN (21 July 1956 – 27 December 2023): Visionary Leader and Legal Luminary

Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, widely known as “Aketi” and fondly addressed as “Arakunrin,” was a prominent Nigerian lawyer and politician. Born on 21 July 1956 in Owo to Reverend J. Ola Akeredolu and Lady Evangelist Grace B. Akeredolu, he left an indelible mark on the political landscape and legal profession in Nigeria until his untimely demise on 27 December 2023.

Education and Early Life: Akeredolu’s educational journey began at Government Primary School in Owo, leading him to Aquinas College in Akure, Loyola College in Ibadan, and Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro, for his secondary and higher school certificate education. His quest for knowledge culminated at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he graduated with a degree in Law in 1977. Subsequently, he attended the Nigerian Law School in 1978.

Legal Career and Achievements: Akeredolu’s illustrious legal career saw him rise to the position of Attorney General of Ondo State from 1997 to 1999. In 1998, he earned the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He chaired the Legal Aid Council from 2005 to 2006, showcasing his commitment to legal advocacy and social justice. Despite facing allegations in 2009, which were later dropped, Akeredolu remained resolute in his dedication to legal excellence.

In recognition of his contributions, the Nigerian Bar Association named its new secretariat in Abuja after him in 2012, citing his selfless service and courage.

Political Journey: Akeredolu delved into politics, aspiring to lead Ondo State. He emerged as the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate for the gubernatorial elections in 2012 and 2016, showcasing a vision centered on agricultural development, education, youth employment, and improved infrastructure.

In 2016, he clinched victory in the Ondo State gubernatorial election, securing his position as the governor. Akeredolu was re-elected in 2020, further solidifying his influence and impact on the state’s development. During his tenure, he advocated for tax payments to boost the economy and fulfilled obligations, demonstrating his commitment to governance.

Illness and Legacy: Akeredolu faced health challenges, battling leukemia from January 2023. Despite a period of medical absence, he continued to steer the affairs of Ondo State, signing a notice on 12 December 2023, appointing Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the acting governor. Tragically, he passed away on 27 December 2023, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, vision, and dedication to public service.

National Honors: In October 2022, Akeredolu was honored with the Nigerian national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by President Muhammadu Buhari, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the nation.
